Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya Is Dead
Kawempe North Member of Parliament Muhammad Ssegirinya has died at the age of 36, Rubaga Hospital officially confirmed on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
The hospital stated that Ssegirinya passed away at 12:10 PM after a prolonged illness that saw his health deteriorate significantly over the past few months.
“With deep sorrow, Rubaga Hospital announces the passing of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Honorable Member of Parliament for Kawempe North,” read a statement from the hospital.
“Despite all efforts to ensure his recovery, he passed away today at 12:10 PM.”
The hospital’s acting executive director, Sr Grace Nanyondo, said earlier in the day that Ssegirinya was “critically sick” and called for prayers.
Confusion had emerged after unverified reports of his death spread in the morning.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among clarified during a parliamentary session that Ssegirinya’s organs had collapsed, but his heart was still functioning, making it unethical for doctors to declare him dead at the time.
National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) also said that Hon. Ssegirinya Muhammad was brain dead, most of his organs had shut down, but was not yet declared dead.
Hours later, Rubaga Hospital confirmed that Ssegirinya had succumbed to his illness.
Ssegirinya’s Legacy
Ssegirinya, a first-term MP representing Kawempe North under the opposition National Unity Platform, was widely known for his dedication to the underprivileged.
Dubbed “Mr. Update” for his active engagement with constituents on social media, Ssegirinya became a beloved figure for his humility, generosity, and relentless advocacy for justice, democracy, and good governance.
Born in 1988 in Masaka District, Ssegirinya rose to prominence despite growing up in poverty.
