A devastating head-on collision between two buses in Uganda’s Kiryandongo District has left 46 people dead and several others injured. The accident occurred after midnight on October 22nd on the Kampala-Gulu Highway, one of Uganda’s busiest routes.
Police initially reported 63 fatalities, but some victims initially thought dead were later found unconscious but alive. Both buses were overtaking other vehicles, including a lorry and an SUV, when they collided head-on. Many passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.
Eyewitness Patrick Midibu described helping survivors after the crash. Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni sent condolences while campaigning nearby. Authorities have blamed speeding and reckless overtaking for the tragedy, with Red Cross officials calling it “uncommonly severe” for Uganda.
