One of the common terms you may come across most of the time nowadays after an angiogram is called a calcification of the blood blockages of the blood vessels, otherwise called as coronary calcifications. This is reasonably common, particularly in those patients who have longstanding diabetes. Until a few years ago, patients who had got coronary calcification were considered an Achilles’ heel of coronary angioplasty. Essentially, these patients were being declined coronary angioplasty and being referred for bypass surgery because there are no devices to open up this catch. But in the last few years, we’ve been having better and advanced technologies such as orbital arthrectomy, root ablation, laser, and intravascular lithotripsy devices, which can clear up the calcium in the blockages of the blood vessels. These technologies have really revolutionized the way we treat patients with coronary blockages. So if you have any patients with having severe coronary blockages and being offered bypass, you can always get a second opinion there. We may be able to offer a therapy in the form of these angioplasty and stents. The biggest advantage of doing angioplasty and stents is the recovery, quicker recovery period where the patients can be discharged within 48 hours after a small pinhole procedure through the wrist. So coronary calcification is not considered anymore a significant risk factor for angioplasty with stents 100 % of the time.
