Trekking to see mountain gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest was truly a dream come true! 🦍 We had the incredible opportunity to get up close with the Rushegura family and it honestly felt like we were living in a national geographic documentary! 😭❤️
True to its name, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is no joke! We trekked 10 km through dense jungle, cutting through vegetation with gloves on to fend off stinging nettles and gators to protect us from fire ants. This trek is physically demanding, expect steep climbs and no clear trails, but that’s part of what makes it such a raw and unforgettable adventure.
Here’s how it works: expert trackers head out ahead of the group to locate the habituated gorilla families, then guide you to them. The gorillas move frequently, so you might find yourself climbing higher or deeper into the forest. A trekking permit costs $800 in Uganda, while in Rwanda, it’s $1,500 but typically involves less strenuous hiking. For us, the challenge of Bwindi made it even more rewarding, an authentic and wild experience unlike anything else.
Mountain gorillas are the largest primates and critically endangered, with only about 1,063 remaining across Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC. Like human fingerprints, each gorilla has a unique nose print, making every encounter truly one-of-a-kind. Both Uganda and Rwanda are doing phenomenal work in conservation, ensuring these majestic creatures thrive in their natural habitats.
Huge shoutout to who were not just the most amazing hosts during our time in Bwindi, but also arranged all our permits, transport, and everything in between to make our trip to Uganda smooth as butter!
Would you ever try this epic trek? 🦍
